AUS v WI 2009-10 2nd Test Day 1 Updates – Adelaide Oval
  • Dec 4th, 09

An interesting match starts today at Adelaide Oval between West Indies and Australia. West Indies have been under pressure after the loss in 1st test. Chris Gayle too have lots to prove in this match. Australia will be trying to continue their domination and finish the series at Adelaide.

Toss: News from out in the middle reveals Windies captain Chris Gayle has won the toss and opted to bat first.

Pitch Report: The Adelaide groundsman usually produce pitches that are flat and batsmen friendly on the first few days. Teams often score more than 400 runs batting first. Australia coach Tim Nielsen believes there won’t be much bounce or swing so the track should suit the Windies far better than the Brisbane one. However, they shouldn’t expect any favours from the hosts as they can be ruthless on any surface.

West Indies 1st Innings

  • West Indies loses their 1st wicket. Adrian Barath c Hussey b Bollinger 3 (20m 14b 0×4 0×6) SR: 21.42
  • WICKET! Barath fails to repeat his heroics from the series opener, flashing at a wide delivery and paying the price. Hussey takes a stunning catch at gully, diving to his left and hanging on with both hands. Bollinger has a scalp off a weak delivery and next in is Sarwan, back in the team after a crocked stint on the sidelines. He tends to some steep bounce to begin with, fending off a single from his ribcage.
  • West Indies 26/1 (4.3 ov)
  • West Indies loses their 2nd wicket. Chris Gayle c Haddin b Bollinger 26 (43m 23b 4×4 1×6) SR: 113.04
  • Sarwan’s drive for three leaves his captain to the strike, who perishes to a very poor shot. WICKET! Attempting to dab a short ball down to third man instead of leaving it alone, Gayle offers a thick enough edge to wicketkeeper Haddin, who leaps into the air to take a great one-handed catch above his head. Gayle mopes off and he really has thrown his wicket away. Typical, really. Next in is Chanderpaul. He’s not one to give his wicket away. He failed twice at the Gabba, so he will want to make up for it here.
  • West Indies 39/2 (8.4 ov)
  • West Indies: 50 runs in 11.2 overs (69 balls), Extras 1
  • Drinks: West Indies – 52/2 in 12.0 overs (Ramnaresh Sarwan 17, Shivnarin Chanderpaul 5)
  • West Indies loses their 3rd wicket. Ramnaresh Sarwan c Clarke b Johnson 28 (46b 4×4 0×6) SR: 60.86
  • WICKET! Poor way to surrender from Sarwan, whose terrible foot work and penchant for playing at the ball far too early sees him drive one straight to Clarke at point. The fielder hangs onto the sitter and off goes the Windies star. Next in is Australian-born Nash, who is lucky to have kept his place in the side ahead of dropped Dowlin. The left-hander finds some early placement and timing, getting off the mark with a confident cut for four. Another boundary – on the extras front – follows, as Johnson’s bouncer balloons over Haddin’s head. And another – Nash glances some errant line before digging out a yorker to close an eventful over.
  • West Indies 84/3 (18.1 ov)
  • West Indies: 100 runs in 20.4 overs (126 balls), Extras 10
  • Lunch: West Indies – 119/3 in 25.0 overs (S Chanderpaul 28)
  • Brendan Nash retired hurt at 119/3 (20, 24.6 overs)
  • Over 34.5: Referral by Australia, Umpire-MR Benson, Batsman – S Chanderpaul (Struck down)
  • Drinks: West Indies – 149/3 in 39.0 overs (Shivnarin Chanderpaul 38, Dwayne Bravo 19)
  • West Indies: 150 runs in 39.1 overs (238 balls), Extras 15
  • 4th Wicket: 50 runs in 106 balls (Shivnarin Chanderpaul 18, Dwayne Bravo 30, Ex 2)
  • Shivnarin Chanderpaul: 50 off 107 balls (5 x 4)
  • Tea: West Indies – 194/3 in 52.0 overs (Shivnarin Chanderpaul 54, Dwayne Bravo 46)
  • West Indies: 200 runs in 55.4 overs (337 balls), Extras 17
  • Dwayne Bravo: 50 off 91 balls (7 x 4)
  • 4th Wicket: 100 runs in 202 balls (S Chanderpaul 31, DJ Bravo 69, Ex 3)
  • Over 62.3: Referral by Australia, Umpire-MR Benson, Batsman – S Chanderpaul (Upheld)
  • West Indies loses 4th wicket. Shivnarin Chanderpaul c Haddin b Watson 62 (151b 5×4 0×6) SR: 41.05
  • S Watson to Chanderpaul, OUT! Another referral. A slower delivery from Watson outside off. Chanderpaul was looking for the drive but played inside the line. The fielders thought there was an edge involved and the replays confirmed it.
  • West Indies loses 5th wicket. Danesh Ramdin b Watson 4 (3b 1×4 0×6) SR: 133.33
  • S Watson to Ramdin, OUT! Bowled him! This one was quicker from Watson. Ramdin was slow in getting his bat down and got an inside edge which crashed into the stumps. Two in quick succession for Australia.
  • West Indies: 250 runs in 65.1 overs (394 balls), Extras 17
  • Drinks: West Indies – 261/5 in 69.0 overs (DJ Bravo 96, DJG Sammy 5)
  • DJ Bravo: 100 off 146 balls (12 x 4, 1 x 6)
  • Over 72.4: Referral by West Indies, Umpire-MR Benson, Batsman – DJ Bravo (Upheld)
  • West Indies lose their 6th wicket. Dwayne Bravo b Hauritz 104 (156b 12×4 1×6) SR: 66.66
  • WICKET! No referral or appeal needed for this one, as Bravo plays all around one and pays the price. Instead of the forward defence he tries to tickle it to third man. Poor. Off he goes and in comes Nash, back from his bruised arm. Sammy, meanwhile, displays his back-foot play with a drive through extra cover for four.
  • West Indies 273/6 (73.2 ov)
  • Brendan Nash walks in again. He was retired hurt on 20.
  • West Indies: 300 runs in 77.3 overs (469 balls), Extras 19
  • New Ball Taken: West Indies 312/6 after 80.1 overs (Brendan Nash 24, Darren Sammy 42)
  • 7th Wicket: 50 runs in 56 balls (Brendan Nash 16, Darren Sammy 33, Ex 3)
  • End Of Day: West Indies – 336/6 in 85.0 overs (Brendan Nash 44, Darren Sammy 44)
