England batsmen denied South Africa a series leveling win at Cape Town. South Africa needed 7 wickets on day 5 of the test to win the match and level the series.
England started the day at 132/3 and soon found themselves in trouble at 179/5. Collingwood and Ian Bell got together at the crease from here and stood there for 57 overs with a sixth wicket partnership of 112 runs. Both batsmen applied themselves at the crease and denied South African bowlers any chances. This partnership was broken when Collingwood was dismissed after making 40 runs in 188 balls.
Wickets started falling once again. South African eyes were all lit up, sighting a victory. England lost 3 more wickets in next 1 overs and the score was 290/9. 2.5 overs were still to be bowled in the day. But Onions stood firm and denied South Africa the victory. Onions was unbeaten at 0 in 18 balls at the end along with Graeme Swann who made 10 runs in 22 balls.
Score : England 273 (Prior 76, Morkel 5-75) and 296 for 9 (Bell 78, Collingwood 40) drew with South Africa 291 (Kallis 108, Anderson 5-63) and 447 for 7 declared (Smith 180, Amla 95)
